Overview
Long Island Chess Club hosts chess classes exclusively for public libraries where patrons of all ages and experience levels are welcome. In addition to free play, there are teaching components, both classroom style and one-on-one coaching for those who are interested. The goal is to bring the community together in a friendly environment to not only promote chess, a game with many benefits, but to provide an opportunity to advance the skill levels of all players.
Benefits
Chess is a cognitive game, which promotes critical thinking and develops problem solving skills. It bolsters confidence and creativity in addition to allowing for positive community interaction and discourse. We encourage players to make friends and maintain good sportsmanship.
Details and Requirements
This program runs one or two hours per class. Please have enough tables and chairs to seat up to 16 players. Suggestions for age groups are children (grades 2-5), teens (grades 6-12), adults (age 18+), or open-to-all-ages. Chess boards and pieces will be provided, along with educational material, a demonstration board for teaching, as well as chess clocks for those interested in playing timed games. Players are welcome to bring their own board sets.
The structure of this program is flexible, and may be adjusted to meet the needs of your library.
Library Program Partners
LICC, formerly known as Checkmate, has primarily partnered with Nassau County Libraries. Programs have been held in Bellmore, Elmont Memorial, Farmingdale, Great Neck (Bayview, Lakeview, and Station Branch), Hewlett-Woodmere, Hicksville, Hillside, Island Park, Jericho, Levittown, Lynbrook, Malverne, Massapequa (Central and Bar Harbor), Merrick, North Merrick, Oceanside, Rockville Centre, and Shelter Rock Public Libraries.
Teen Community Service
Community service credit is available for libraries wanting to enhance their teen volunteer opportunities. Helpers should have at lease a basic knowledge of chess. They will assist in setting up for the boards and pieces, playing those without partners, and helping to clean up afterward.
